Scrum Artifacts

Artifacts refer to results that are created in the Scrum process. The Scrum Guide defines the three essential artifacts, namely the Product Backlog, the Sprint Backlog, and the Product Increment. For each artifact, a commitment is also defined, which these artifacts should strive toward.

Artifacts and commitments

  • The Product Backlog requires the commitment to the Product Goal.
  • The Sprint Backlog requires the commitment to the Sprint Goal.
  • The Product Increment requires the commitment to the Definition of Done.
  1. Product Backlog
    The Product Backlog is created by the Product Owner. It can be seen as a list of all tasks, features, and epics and therefore describes the entirety of the product to be created. The commitment associated with the Product Backlog is achieving the overall Product Goal. As a rule, the Product Backlog is maintained on a Kanban board. This is also where tickets for the developers are created. However, the tickets do not all need to be fully detailed from the beginning. They are usually prioritized according to what should be completed next. Naturally, the tickets that will be worked on next should already be described in the greatest detail, while large and still undefined epics are initially only outlined at a high level.

  2. Sprint Backlog
    The Sprint Backlog can be regarded as a subset of the Product Backlog. It contains all the tickets that are planned for the current sprint. During Sprint Planning, the scope of the Sprint Backlog is determined by the development team and the Product Owner. By the time tickets are placed in the Sprint Backlog, they should be fully refined and comply with the Definition of Ready. With the Sprint Backlog, the team commits in every sprint to completing this selected scope of work—the Sprint Goal.

  3. Increment
    A Product Increment is ultimately nothing more than a work result completed within one or more sprints. However, a Product Increment is only considered complete when it is fully usable and complies with the Definition of Done. It is entirely up to the development team how many Product Increments are completed within a sprint. The completed increments are presented to stakeholders at the end of each sprint during the Sprint Review.

In addition to the Scrum artifacts mentioned above, there are other aspects that are important for understanding Scrum artifacts:

  • Definition of Done:
    The Definition of Done (DoD) is a shared understanding within the Scrum team of what it means for work on an item to be complete. The DoD defines the minimum requirements that must be fulfilled before an item can be considered "done".

  • Product Increment:
    The Product Increment is the sum of all increments created during previous sprints. It represents the current state of the Scrum team's work product and is continuously expanded and improved until the project is complete.

  • Sprint Goal:
    The Sprint Goal is a concise statement describing the objective of the current sprint in a way that is understandable to every team member. It helps the team focus on a shared vision and prioritize the sprint's work.

  • Burndown Chart:
    The Burndown Chart is a graphical representation of the team's progress throughout the sprint. It shows how much work remains and how quickly the team is completing it. This enables the team to monitor progress and make adjustments where necessary.

Scrum artifacts are therefore much more than documentation tools. They help the team organize work, improve transparency, and strengthen collaboration. A solid understanding of Scrum artifacts is therefore essential for successfully implementing Scrum.

Which characteristics are important for Scrum artifacts?

Another important characteristic of Scrum artifacts is their dynamic and flexible nature. This means they can be continuously updated and adapted throughout the project to respond to changes and new insights. For example, the Product Owner can reorder or update the Product Backlog to reflect changing customer needs or market trends. Likewise, the development team can update the Sprint Backlog during a sprint to address unexpected issues or new requirements.

Furthermore, Scrum artifacts are transparent, meaning they should be visible to all team members and relevant stakeholders at all times. This promotes collaboration and communication within the team as well as transparency toward customers and other stakeholders.

It is also important to note that Scrum artifacts do not have to exist in physical form. They can be created and managed digitally, which is particularly beneficial for distributed teams and remote working environments.

    Scrum artifacts should be accessible to all relevant parties at all times to promote collaboration, communication, and transparency.

    Scrum artifacts should always be kept current to ensure the team remains on track to achieve the project's goals.

  • Relevance:
    Scrum artifacts should only contain information that is relevant and useful for achieving the project goals, avoiding unnecessary or redundant content.

  • Clarity:
    Scrum artifacts should be clear and easy to understand, making collaboration within the team and communication with stakeholders more effective.

  • Flexibility:
    Scrum artifacts should remain dynamic and adaptable so they can respond to changing requirements, new insights, and the specific needs of both the team and the project.

When Scrum artifacts meet these criteria, they help organize the team's work, improve transparency and communication, and ensure the team stays focused on achieving the project's objectives.
